Concept & Design
My perception is changing my REALITY
Since 1970's Fortitude Valley has had a reputation for being a dodgy area filled with brothels, gambling and seedy characters. More recently, the are has been changing as people have been utilising the opportunity of turning dodgy to desirable in the fashion, music and art scene.
The ability to identify the potential in anything and anyone is an important step towards inspiring and realizing positive change. Thus the concept of changing your perception of a place begins to present the multitude of opportunities for changing your world's reality in a positive way.
Can you change your perception of the world?
Can you change the worlds reality?
The key design feature of the gallery is open air projection screens. These hanhing screens create a visual illusion as you experience them from the street when their dimensions appera to change as your position changes in space.
The act of movement in space over time has the ability to change your understanding of the installation from your original perception. Thus as you come to understand the space you are in, your perception about the space change which in turn come to change your concept of reality
Context and Design
The church-club/old church - key design inspiration- perception vs reality
Site conditions: Solid & static (church/carpark)
Response: Floating, dynamic screen structure
Site conditions: Access & line of sight- dead end- scary/unknown/isolated
Response: Placement of cubes in line o sight, large visual element
Site conditions: Carpark - concrete wall- blank canvas
Response: Exaggerate scale- human (art box) vs urban (large geometric panels)
Gallery Design
Two key elements:
-four projection screens
-art box
The Art Box
Activates a dead/ dangerous space by creating a space for peope to interact with. It can display traditional art works- viewed from inside & outside, projection onto wall. 500x500 cubes makes up a seating area-flexible area.
All of the compoentes will fit into the art box allowing for eay storage and transportability.
Changing in any place is inevitable, so we must seek to understand our existence as best as we can so as to make the most perceptive judgements about how we should design the future realty of the Valley
